Bachelor of Social Work graduate - Jaclyn Lamont

Jaclyn Lamont

Hello! My name is Jaclyn Lamont and I live in Kelowna, BC where I am an Aboriginal Family Service Worker with MCFD.   I completed my BSW through Vancouver Island University and was lucky enough to be a part of the first ever BSW program through VIU, graduating in 2015 with a Child Welfare Specialization.  The BSW program at VIU was extremely helpful in order to prepare me for Social Work in the "real world".  All the content, experiences, practicum placements and professors gave me a wealth of knowledge and gave me the skills, abilities and confidence to further myself as an individual as well as a working professional.  I was apprehensive about online learning at first but found the program to be incredibly easy to navigate.  There was always someone to support me with technology and understanding course expectations.  Online learning allowed me the freedom to reside where I would like, continue to work hours that fit my schedule and most impressively, attend "classes" in my pajamas from the comfort of my own home.  I felt as though there would have been no better program to offer me the ability to learn with so much autonomy.  Upon graduating I was hired almost immediately to work for the Ministry of Children and Family Development in my current position.  I have continued at this job and my life has come full circle as I am now a practicum mentor for a student completing her final practicum of her BSW through VIU.   If you're thinking about doing your BSW at VIU - take the plunge.  It will be the best decision you ever made.

Bachelor of Social Work graduate - Sarah Lawrence

Sarah Lawrence

My name is Sarah Lawrence and I graduated from the VIU Bachelor of Social Work program in 2015. I am currently working at North Island College as the Aboriginal Education Advisor at the Comox Valley campus where I have been since October 2015. The BSW program provided me with the skills necessary to work in the helping profession and was instrumental in providing the tools required to launch my career. It also prepared me to think critically and to authentically engage and build rapport with the clients I work with. The professors were all professionally engaged in their areas of expertise and the practice field. They were able to provide pathways to success for students and to empower them with confidence in their learning and practice. I cannot say enough amazing things about VIU and the BSW program.

Bachelor of Social Work graduate - Tori Babcock

Tori Babcock

My name is Tori Babcock and I work as a registered social worker at the Psychiatric In-patient Unit at Belleville General Hospital in Belleville, Ontario. I graduated in 2015 from the VIU BSW program and it was the best decision of my life! Having graduated previously with a social service worker diploma, I was looking to increase my skills, knowledge, practical experiences and job opportunities. In fact, my first paid position after I graduated on the Assertive Community Treatment Team, came about because of the experiences I gained in my 4th year practicum. The professors were all knowledgeable and experienced in their areas of practice.  They provided personalized experiences and contact and were always willing to support students in attaining their educational and practice goals. Even in an online program far away from where I was located, I never felt isolated or alone. I can definitely recommend the program to any potential students.
