Marti Harder

Professor

RN; BSN; MSN

Marti joined the VIU BSN program as a full-time faculty member in August, 2016.  Marti started teaching in 2009 at Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (a BC Indigenous educational institution) in the HCA and LPN programs, and also worked as an Instructor at Thompson Rivers University in the BSN program.  Marti’s clinical background includes: acute care (post-surgical, general medicine, mental health), community (home health) nursing, and end-of-life care, with a particular interest in complex wound care.  These experiences took place in urban, rural and remote BC communities, some while working as a travel nurse.  Marti’s educational passions include student engagement, and partnering with students to help them achieve their dreams, recognizing that ‘success’ means different things to different people.  A favourite quote of hers is: “To understand education, one must love it or care deeply about learning, and accept it as a legitimate process for growth and change…[Y]ou have to have enough love of learning to have the courage to remake it, imagine it, and teach it” (Marie Battiste).  Marti’s research interests are broad, and include: health promotion for nursing students, the lived experiences of mental health clients and their families, and the meaning of educational success for students.
