Dr. Andrea Smilski is the Interim Dean of the Faculty of Health and Human Services (HHS). She has served VIU for the last 14 years, beginning in the Centre for Continuing Studies in 2002, progressing to instructing in the HHS BSN Faculty, and for the last 5 years, serving as the HHS Associate Dean. She has worked as a registered nurse, educator, manager, and leader in the health and education sectors in Canada as well as with the Canadian government overseas in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Dr. Smilski holds degrees from the University of Manitoba (Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing), the University of Hertfordshire, London, England (Masters in Business Administration), and Athabasca University (Doctorate in Business Administration). She also has completed PhD coursework in the Philosophy of Nursing from the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Smilski has served Vancouver Island University and Athabasca University in a number of roles related to operations, governance and service. She has provided service on a number of important committees, such as Search Committees, Student Progress Committees, Student Affairs Committees, Student Graduate Committees, Ethics Committees, Human Resources Committees, and Professional Committees, particularly related to Nursing and Nursing Administration and Leadership. She has conducted teaching assignments, student supervision both at the undergraduate and graduate level, authored two manuscripts, edited two chapters in nursing education books, authored 2 peer reviewed articles in health journals, and reviewed numerous articles for management and health journals. Her conference presentations are numerous and representative of her interdisciplinary background. Dr. Smilski has maintained a research agenda in organizational growth and sustainability as well as organizational and employee health and wellbeing. The promotion of healthy and thriving populations and workplaces are foundational to Dr. Smilski’s practice.

Dr. Smilski’s leadership goals are congruent with VIU’s strategic direction and resonate strongly with the HHS Faculties mission, beliefs, goals, and desired student outcomes.
