Opportunities include working in community settings with people who have disabilities and as educational assistants in the public school system. There are numerous jobs for qualified graduates as community services workers, teacher’s aides, and residential service workers.

Advanced Studies Opportunities

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Vancouver Island University certificate.

The School and Community Support Worker Program provides a first year of study in the Disability Studies Diploma (DIDS). Students who successfully complete 36 SCSW credits receive a Vancouver Island University - School and Community Support Worker Certificate. Students may then apply to the Disability Studies diploma to complete a second level of study. Successful students graduate with the Disability Studies Diploma. VIU's diploma has full bock transfer to the 3rd year of the Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation at the University of Calgary.

The SCSW certificate has the potential to ladder into these programs at Vancouver Island Univeristy:

Graduates of DIDS may ladder into the the Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation (BCR) at University of Calgary; for students graduating from VIU's Disabilities Studies diploma, University of Calgary offers a block transfer directly into the BCR.

DIDS graduates may also ladder into a Bachelor of Disability Management at Pacific Coast University in Port Alberni.
